My folio surrounds the theme ‘Issues in society’ in relation to the sporting world. I’ve used the subject of sport and capturing well-known sports figures to highlight and demonstrates these issues. Throughout the year I’ve explored the issue of ‘Mental Health’ and ‘Concussions’ and the dangers of head knocks. I’ve used portraiture to highlight and capture these issues and raise awareness. In Unit 3 I focused of the subject DeMar Derozan (professional basketball player) who has publicly spoken up about his battles with depression and the idea of encouraging others to speak up and generate discussions. I presented the piece capturing this subject to present the idea that you are not alone and to also provide strength and hope to those suffering with the message we’re all human. Additionally, in Unit 4 I focused on the subject Jonathan Brown (former AFL footballer) to present the theme of concussions and the dangers of head knocks due his experiences, estimated to have suffered roughly 12 concussions throughout the course of his playing career. Both pieces were completed to raise greater awareness for these issues, highlighting its importance and seriousness while also with the intention to generate discussion. My final pieces both contain a black and white portrait completed using Progresso pencils, incorporating techniques such as smudging, shading, blending and whilst also maintaining rough elements. Water colour has also been a theme to create the background, focusing on the use of colour to create contrast with the black and white portrait. Through my works I aim to put forward these issues in society, with the hope and goal to provide strength and support to those who may be suffering while also highlighting the importance and seriousness of these themes presented.
